Risk Talent · For risk professionals

Your next move in risk

Senior risk people come to us when they are weighing the next move: chief risk officers, heads of risk, risk committee chairs, and interim and contract specialists. Talk to us in confidence about the role that would stretch you and the firms building risk functions you could lead.

Risk Talent is led by Benn Pople, who has recruited only risk leaders since 2003. Whether you are looking now or want to know how the market sees you, your name is never put forward without your agreement.

How we work

How does RiskTAE work with senior risk candidates?

Two ways: a search finds you, or you come to us.

For each role we map the people who fit, most of whom are not looking, and approach them in confidence. Or you register or book a career call, and we say which searches you fit now and which come next.

Before a client sees your CV, people who have held roles like it (former chief risk officers and heads of risk, former regulators and interim executives) interview you on the technical substance of the role. That is where a CV gets tested: say you wrote the ICAAP and expect to be asked which Pillar 2 risks you sized and how the board challenged the result.

Your CV

What happens to my CV once I send it?

It goes onto our own database and is never sent to a client without your agreement for that role.

When you go forward, the client receives it with our written view of you, as one of a short list. We run the interviews, pass feedback both ways and handle the offer, and stay close through notice and the first months.

One thing before you send it: regulatory references for a senior management function, a certification function or a notified non-executive role cover the previous six years, from all relevant former employers. Write those years so that each employer’s reference would tell the same story.

Confidentiality

How confidential is a conversation with you?

Confidential in both directions.

We do not name the client until you have said you are interested, and where the client asks, you sign a non-disclosure agreement before we name the firm. Nothing you tell us goes to a client without your agreement.

Most senior searches begin while the incumbent is still in post, so the first approach describes the firm by type and balance sheet. If that sounds like your employer’s closest competitor, say so and the conversation ends there.

Your current employer hears about a move from you; in our experience the hiring firm requests regulatory references only once you have accepted a conditional offer.

SMF approval

How does regulatory approval affect a move into a senior management function?

PS12/26 changes to the SM&CR took effect

If the role is a senior management function, you may only perform it once the regulator has approved you.

That includes SMF4, the PRA’s Chief Risk function, so the start date is built around the approval. From a complete application the regulator has three months to decide; the clock stops each time it asks for more information.

Most of the waiting happens before the application: references covering six years and a criminal record check no older than six months at submission. The application also carries a statement of responsibilities listing what you will be accountable for; read it before it goes in, because under the duty of responsibility it is relevant evidence.

If you step in as an interim, you are held to the standards of a permanent senior manager from day one. The PRA’s 12-week rule sets conditions for temporary cover while an approval is sought, so agree with the firm before you start how your appointment will be approved; see interim chief risk officers.

The market

What will you tell me about the market?

What we see in the searches we run, and whether a role is right for you.

Which firms are building their risk leadership, and what a brief at your level asks for: it describes what success looks like in the first year, so ask about year one before the title.

A head of risk moving from a large bank to a small one should ask whether the title comes with an approved function: at firms with gross total assets of £250 million or less the PRA expects few senior managers beyond the mandatory chief executive, chief finance and chair functions, so the role may carry every risk type with a small team and no SMF4. Before accepting a CRO role, meet the chair of the risk committee, who is responsible for safeguarding the independence of the risk function and overseeing its performance, you included.

One date runs through every capital brief we take: 1 January 2027, when the PRA’s Basel 3.1 rules take effect under PS1/26. Terms are in our glossary.

Interim and contract

Do you place interim and contract risk professionals?

Yes. Chief risk officers and heads of risk between permanent roles, interim risk managers, and day-rate specialists in models, credit, market and operational risk, liquidity and regulatory change register with us in confidence. Send your CV to talent@risktae.com and say which assignments you will take.

FAQ

Questions from candidates

Do I need to be looking for a role to register?

No. Most people on our market maps are not looking when we first call. Register and we will call you when a search fits.

Do you charge candidates a fee?

No. The client pays our fee, which is agreed in writing before any work starts.

I work outside the UK. Can you help?

Yes. We run searches for international clients and for roles that span jurisdictions, and since April 2026 the PRA’s assessment takes account of approvals in other jurisdictions and SMF experience elsewhere (PS12/26).

Do you search for risk committee chairs and non-executive directors?

Yes; see risk committee chair and NED search. The chair of the risk committee holds SMF10 and, under SS28/15, must not perform any executive function in the firm.
